Note about the Homeless Series:
Lately I have been photographing the homeless in our Nation's Capital. Many of them make great photos and some not so great. Either way they touch my heart in so many ways on a daily basis. They can piss you off or make you laugh all day. On many occasions I have had the pleasure to just sit and talk with some of them about any and nearly everything. Their circumstances are unbelievable as to how they have come to the position they are in now-- but could happen to any one of us at any given time.
This series is not to poke fun at the homeless - although some may be humorous. I always get their permission first and compensate them if I can for the opportunity to photograph them. Most pics will not have a model release as some are simply not approachable in that way. Meaning they do not want to sign anything. I am never rude to them and I am always respectful of their wishes to be photographed or not.

Comments ENCOURAGED. I would like to know your thoughts about photographing the homeless. Your suggestions and ideas are welcome too.

I think that its great that you photograph them and how you go about trying to compensate them for letting you and how kind you are its great to know there are people out there who will help and recognize the homeless as still being memebers of soceiety! I think this series is absoulutely marvelous! :3
It's a pretty noble endeavor actually. These are people who nobody really pays attention to, and of course they get compesnated for it, which is great.
The photograph itself is cool because of positive light in which your depicting this guy. It's like saying, "Life is hard, but it won't get to me."
The saturation...or added colors create a nice effect. It makes it look a little like a painting. One thing I would complain about is the text on top. I'm usually not a fan of placing lettering in the pics. In a sense, it sort of downplays the rest of the photograph because it's so prominent. Lettering, I feel, should only be there to say something that the picture cannot say at all, either a narrative of backstory, or a conversation. But the picture itself says what the lettering says--and more.
And I agree, I was not too keen on the text on the pic either, but the empty space felt, well, empty. I guess I should make mention that that was the things he would say periodically as folk passes by. I'll rework that later or make it like a cd cover, since he plans on recording sooner or later. Thanks for a great comment.

Someday soon I hope we come to a finer place in our collective minds to better accept and appreciate nude works of art! Until then, we must pacify the uninformed.

i actually like the text, it's what initially drew me to the picture. i like the message it sends, this guy has complete freedom in the world to do what he likes, whenever and whereever, completely free of obligations.
and i think it's great that you're taking the time to talk to these guys and compensate them. you probably made their day by showing you care
Thanks for that comment and I have to admit they make my day too. Especially when we know the situation they are in and they can still smile and have an "up" attiude. Makes me appreciate what I have and complain less about what I don't have.
But I'm still not sure about the text and am considering redoing it as a cd cover since to sing is one of his immediate goals. I donno.
